The Conspiracy of Pontiac and the Indian War After the Conquest of Canada: From the Spring of 1763 to the Death of Pontiac
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (October, 1994)
Authors: Francis Parkman and Michael N. McConnell
Average review score:

Gripping history from a most illustrative pen
This book and its follow-on volume 2 of 2 provide us with rare detail of a mostly forgotten chapter of American history. While Francis Parkman is best known for his 7-volume masterpiece "France and England in North America, as well as numerous accounts of Westward expansion, this more focused 2-volume work, in my opinion, brings forward his most impressive writing skills. Parkman literally paints with words, including the most descriptive interpretations I have ever read of the early American frontier and the fascinating range of peoples vying for control or mere survival.

These two volumes are a true pleasure to read and a treasure for those who enjoy the history of North America and its peoples, as well as those who appreciate the power and beauty of the written word.

Contact and Conflict

The benchmark for texts on West coast Euro-Native relations.
Since the publication of the first edition this text has been the basis for all later works on the subject. This edition also includes an new preface in which Fisher argues against most of the criticism that this book has received. Nonetheless there is no more complete book that surveys the issue available

Just like being there!
This book follows the apocalyptic events of 1983 within the PC party. From detailed reporting of the Battle of Winnipeg, to the War to Settle the Score in Ottawa, this book has it all. Each contender's campaign is studied and the characters are well fleshed out. Be a fly on the wall in the room where Joe Clark decided that 67% was not enough. Find out how Brian Mulroney secured the leadership long before the convention. And lament over the demise of John Crosbie. I was tired after reading this book, as though I had just spent 4 days at the convention! Not many books in this genre are better.

Cowgirls
Published in Paperback by Ten Speed Press (September, 1996)
Author: Candace Savage
Average review score:

The cowgirl's contribution to the women of the modern west.
Chandace Savage's COWGIRLS will become a classic in Western Literature. In her three divisions: Real Cowboy Girls, Living Legends, and Rhinestone Cowgirls, Savage passes through the realities and myths of cowgirldom. From the brutal work of the lonesome ranches and cattle trails through the grace of the rodeo arena, and the beauty of the silver screen she shows the contribution of the cowgirl to the women of the modern west. But it is a west far greater than even the western ranch community and its celluloid imitators, it is a west of the soul influencing the strength, courage and leadership of women today.

An excellent down-to-earth cookbook
I found this cookbook not only easy to follow, but that it did not require any special ingrediants. All that is required in the recipes you can find in your own cupboard, which is helpful, especially if you want to whip something up spur of the moment. I also found the recipes to be very tasty and easy to make. Family and friends really enjoyed and complimented me on the meals I whipped up for them from this recipe book. I highly recommend this book to anyone, not just to someone whose husband is an avid hunter. I have substituted beef for the wild meats and found that the recipes worked just as well. A delightful cookbook to have and use.

Crazy Man's Creek
Published in Paperback by Caitlin Pr (October, 1998)
Author: Jack Boudreau
Average review score:

Trials and Tribulations In Early Twentieth Century B.C.
Jack Boudreau grew up in the central BC lumber town of Penny, which is located along the Canadian National Railway line that runs through the Fraser valley in central B.C. He was regaled as a youth with stories of the guides, trappers, settlers, prospectors and others who tried to make this inhospitable wilderness their home during the beginning of the twentieth century. He decided that these stories were too valuable to let disappear with the passing of the original taletellers and began to record their stories. After several decades of collecting data from/about these individuals, Jack has done an excellent job of consolidating the best of their stories in this pleasurably readable collection. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in outdoor adventures. The wondrous thing is that the stories are true and these robust individuals actually went through trials that the contemporary reader might find incredible.

I may be a biased reviewer in that, J. Boudreau is my mother's brother and I also grew up listening to a few of the tales depicted in this book. I can guarantee that once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down until it's finished. In my case, I read it several times. This book is worth every penny and will bring you much pleasure.

The Cree of North America (First Peoples)
Published in Library Binding by Lerner Publications Company (April, 2002)
Author: Deborah B. Robinson
Average review score:

An informative & profusely illustrated look at the Cree
"The Cree of North America," by Deborah B. Robinson, is a fascinating look at the Native American people known as the Cree. The book combines an easy-to-read text with many full-color photographs. Also included are maps, a glossary, an index, many sidebar articles, and other supplementary features.

Topics covered include the Cree language, their environment, plants and animals in their areas, early Cree history, traditional arts and crafts, and more. Robinson doesn't shy away from controversial subjects; for example, she discusses the impact of the anti-fur movement on the Cree, for whom hunting and trapping have been important economic activities.
